A little question here, I've been offered a low milage Rover 25 1400cc gearbox cheap (part number TRC101881N) but I'm not 100% sure if it will fit straight in place of my earlier R8 unit. Are later 25 (R3) units interchangeable with earlier units on the older R8 model? They look identical, I guess the speedo drive could be changed over if that could be an issue. Anyone had a simular experience? The 25 unit is a cable type like my R8 so I guess it will fit, but is the input shaft the same along with the clutch assembly?

I think it depends whether the engine in your R8 is honda or K-series, as I think they had different gearboxes - dont quote me on this though!
Will get the haynes book of lies out later and see what types of gearbox were fitted.
I imagine it would fit though.........

My car has a K series engine, like the 25 the gearbox is coming from. I wondered if anyone on here has fitted a later gearbox with any problems.

There was a late change on the 25/ZR to another gearbox manufacturer, as I don't recognise the part number as being from an R65u gearbox then it may be the later type. If it looks like the same casing then it should be an R65u. Any R65 will fit, you just want to avoid the non-uprated version (bonded rather than bolted on diff) as they aren't as reliable but were only found in the Metro anyway I believe. Later 100s had the R65u aswell.
All 214 and 1400cc variants came with a 3.9 final drive, 216 and close ratio boxed Metros came with a 3.7 final drive and the normal Metros and R100s came with a 3.5 final drive.
And for reference incase anyone searches for it, the R65 gear ratios are as follows:
1st 3.417
2nd 1.947
3rd 1.333
4th 1.104
5th 0.854
