As the weather changes my autofactor can start doing his boat payments again.
Time to finally start on the tourer, seeing as i have had it for months and driven around faultlessly. There hasn't really been and reason to do anything in the bad (very cold) weather and with not having a single dry day since owning the car, being honest, i couldn't be bothered.
So now it Begins
As we are at a whopping 51k miles on this car, chances are the main service hasn't been done yet. Which sucks
So the shopping list:
Spark Plugs
HT Leads
Thermostat and new housing
Air Filter
CTS
Lambda
Water Pump
Gearbox Oil
1ltr PS Fluid
Sump Gasket
Timing belt
Aux belt/belts
Rear wiper blade
Total price £238
Already owned:
Full gasket set
Headbolts
Oil Filter
So other than a major service, there was a leak on the nearside front cam carrier, unfortunately it's pretty much a top end rebuild bar 10 head bolts to sort that issue, so when in Rome.
The result of this should be a clean sheet come april's MOT.
I can of course do a part by part fix it guide but that might be a little boring for the people who know how to do most of it, so up to you.

ok a sunny (2 degrees) thursday morning we crack on. 09:30 start taking tools out to the car.
First job after letting the car warm up to the point the fan came on was to take the timing belt over off. Now being of the fat finger variety i ended up dropping the engine down a little on the engine mounts so i could get access to the lower bolts in the drivers footwell.
Once timing was checked and aligned we can start dropping fluids and taking bits off.
On pulling the plugs i was happy to see they were in really good condition, maybe a sign this car had been serviced very recently.
Ok fluides out
Basically take anything off that connect the head to any part of the rest of the car. remembering fuel feed and fuel return to be the last ones.
Now the idler comes off and releases the belts and pulley wheels, remember to loosen the pulleys before taking the belt off.
then release the final 10 headbolts and pull, put the head elsewhere and see what you have left.
By the looks of it in this instance, it was a just in time move.
And that's lunch 12:00
Next water pump and thermostat housing

What’s the oil on the plugs?
Did you get to the bottom of the electrical issue that the original seller had?
Are you keeping it now?

Time to start on the head with a clean up and new inlet gasket ready for sealing the cam carriers on.
New mls gasket fitted without the shim as this is the first gasket its had done and head placed back on.

part of the reason for the rebuild, cam cover gaskets failed.
Nope, just lock it with the key at night. Doesn't drain the battery for about 2 weeks that way.
tbh no, i need a 75 estate, this is just to small for my work load. Will be mechanically sound with 12 month MOT before it goes though.
Will be at pol in it (well that's the plan anyway).

A For Sale sign in he window and POL sounds like a grand plan!
Would look great with a set of alloys on it.

I keep getting told otherwise.
Not like i don't have 15 sets to choose from if alloys are prefered

Well, been to the mot station today to have a go on the sniffer to see if there is any issues with the old dreaded emissions and all was good.
Quick trip up the ramp shows everything else was good so should be good to go for its mot in June.
No excuse then, see you all at pol

Hi Craig, where did you support the engine before cracking off the

timing side engine mount; block of wood under the sump?
