Idling fast and other issues

Hello all,

I'm slowly buts surely getting my mum's 216 back together after a HGF.

Its a 1991 216 GSI with the Honda SOHC engine.

Its all back together but there's a error on the ECU which seems to suggest that there's a problem with the Top Dead Centre Sensor. What might be the trouble and how do i reslove it?

The car is idling at about 2000rpm which can't be right.

Also, despite running the car for about half an hour in the drive, the fan didn't kick in. I've checked the temp sender and the fan and both seem fine, but still the fan won't come on when the engine is hot. Again any ideas?

Final one, the brake/running lights don't work. There is current getting to the contact as I've had a power probe down there and the bulbs are fine as I've checked them in my car. Once again any ideas?

Many many thanks for any advice in advance!

Hi,

If you have a search on the forums there is a thread with the error codes for the ECU and what they indicate on it.

Thanks, I've got the error code booklet already. I've cleared that TC error.

I'm still having problems with the fast idling though and the fan

I'm no expert on the hondas engines versions, however on the rover engined versions the ECU temperature sensor is also used to control the fans. When the sensor fails on the rover versions the idle speed increases (as the engine doesn't know whether it is hot or cold), and the fans run permenantly (for the same reason).

Worth a check, although it would probably log a fault code too.

When my T-Series was idling high it was my stepper motor. But asking me where that is on the Honda engine is like asking me to know how the real bad trio called Rod, Jane and Freddy always got a 2 minute slot on bloody Rainbow with Zippy and the rest of the gang.

for the tdc sensor is it plugged in first of all, if so i would nip to a scrappys and put one on, for the idleing, is the throttle cable all nice i take it, could you have possibly have left a pipe off giving it an air leak, my honda takes ages for the fan to kick in, i have to take it for a drive sometimes, out of interest where does your temperature gauge sit, mine never gets upto half way, which i find odd,

Thanks for the replies.

The temp gauge usually sits just below half way...........................but its nearly exploded when I blew the head gasket!

As you have had it in bits, make sure the inlet manifold doesn't have an air leak. This could lead to a high idle. If you want delve deeper, here is a good write up PGMFi idle control http://hondainfo.hottamale.hu/manuals/H ... hpt_23.pdf
