is it easy enough to change engine on 98 rover 214. does the box have to come out or will the engine come up past it? any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome, its probably easier to take the engine & box out as a unit and split them outside the bay

Yep I'd agree with that. You can do it with the gearbox still in place but it is a very tight fit. Easier to remove them both together and swap them over on the garage floor.

Are you talking about swapping a gearbox? Changing a complete engine? Swaping for a 16v?

Assuming you're just talking about swapping like for like, then as has been mentioned, remove the whole engine and gb together and then seperate the gb outside of the car.

I'm not that familar with the bubble (post 95), but on the wedge, the biggest issues are generally undoing the suspension (so you can get the half shafts out of the gb) - rusted bolts, and the bl**dy 18mm bolts on the driver's side engine mounts - why oh why couldn't they use 19mm like everyone else in the world!! (Same on the traction control arms as well :()

Otherwise, it is just a case of being methodical and labeling everything as you go. A roll of freezer bags and marker pen help you keep all the bolts and screws in sperate "lots" which makes life a lot eaiser!

thanks for the advice, i will take engine and box out complete.i take it that when i remove shafts from box some gear oil will leak out. does anyone know what oil is in the box and is there a level bung

Yes the oil WILL leak out! There's a level bung and a drain bung (17mm IIRC) on the passenger side of the GB. I'd recommend draining it first.

You need about 2l to fill it. I can't remember the spec, but I seem to remember it is semi-synth GB oil.

The best way to fill it, is to have the level bung open, but fill it down through the breather (on top of the GB, next to the reversing light switch). Means you're not struggling to push oil can tubes down the side of the GB.
