Track Day

Hi, haven't been on here for ages!

My 220 gti has been resting in my garage for nearly 4 years now and its about time I did something with it! Its still in pretty good condition but needs a little bit of work doing to it.

Anyway I've had the crazy idea of maybe turning it into a bit of a trackday toy, I'm in no way expecting it to be the best thing for track driving but i'm getting bored at the weekends and am in need of a hobby :D and it seems like a cheapish way of getting into track days to "test the water".

I suppose i just really want to know if anyone has ever used a 220 for track days or if it is a totally stupid idea!

Thanks

Steve

dont know about a 220 but ive done a couple in a 218 coupe. car did well just didnt have the legs in the straights. i could of benefited from better quality tyres as well. make sure you upgrade the brakes too. the standard 262mm are rubbish. i ran the 282mm but go even bigger if you can. few pics of me round cadwell http://rover200.org.uk/forums/viewtopic ... 6&start=75

It depends on how far you want to take it, you can track day anything!

Strip out anything that isn't needed, better brakes and good tyres and some stiffer/lower suspension and it'll be fairly nippy on the track.

Thanks for the info guys, like I say initially I just want to give it a go to see if I enjoy it so some better tyres and brakes are probably going to be the limit of the mods. Can't wait to give it a go!

Yeah, I guessing that i will get hooked quite easily as well!

Thanks for the advise, I'm going to have to put new tyres on it before I do anything so while im at it i'll put some half decent ones on it but other than that i'll run it pretty standard at first. I suppose my nearest track is Brands but think i'll do a few runs at an airfield first (a lot less to hit!)

Well dug the car out of the garage today, and was pleasantly surprised....... after 4 years of sitting there it started first time! (With fresh oil of course!)
Just got to wait until I sort a larger garage later this year then can make a start on sorting it for its first track outing.... can't wait!

Right well, 6 months on and I've made a fair bit of progress and its hopefully not too long before its first track outing!
Ended up taking the project a bit further than I first anticipated, and decided to go for an all out track car.

Car now has:
Safety devices roll cage
Sparco bucket seats
Luke harnesses
Sparco steering wheel
620ti gear box with type b diff
Fully polybushed suspension
Gaz gold coilovers
Mg Zs brake setup (still to be fitted)
Speedline mistral alloys with toyo 888 tyres
Plus a lot of other smaller bits and pieces still to be fitted

Anyway got it back on its wheels this past weekend and took some pictures. Hope people like it!

Don't suppose you fancy removing the headlining and selling it to me do you?

Not really! Sorry! Was thinking of stripping it out but it hides a multitude of sins!
