My own experience of CPS failure on a 95 214. The car was running fine, parked up for an appointment, came out after a while and it wouldn't start. Cranking over but not firing at all. I looked at various things and, running out of options, swapped the crank sensor (I always carry a spare!) and that sorted the problem. Sounds much like what 961tat describes i.e. complete failure without warning.

As Hugh suggests, it's well worth trying something like the Rovermems app. It can show any fault codes and you can also use it with the engine running, so if you can replicate the fault it might point you in the right direction.

The CPS failure mode seems to be instant and complete, so may my problem is different. Better get a spare though !

I've got an aftermarket Gunson bit of kit that seems to cover the CPS. so I'll dig that out.

One other thought. Reading your initial message, you mentioned three intermittent faults. Did these happen simultaneously or were they individual at random times? If they happened simultaneously, then you are looking for some common circuitry.

Changing the alternator has fixed the battery drain, so I'm now just looking for the intermittent revs cut.

Driving around below 3000rpm seems to be the way to avoid it....
