New-ish Member ! hello !

Post by rover216GSIman »

Hey everyone!

I have rejoined the forum after about a year hiatus

The occasion? Well I’ve just re-bought my old Rover 216GSI! J731MDO - after I had posted a series of posts on my light restoration. The plan is to take it on a one way road trip to Cyprus in September.

It’s a bit of an unknown quantity - it’s now done an additional 10K and it seems no one has serviced it since I last owned it. It’ll need a good going over.

It’s in need of an oil change, and a new windscreen! - but one thing that concerns me is the grumbling bearing noise from within the engine - it could be PAS pump, alternator or the crankshaft eeek :slapme

Anyway I am hoping to make it to the POL again this year but appreciate any advice 👏

:welcome

Welcome back to you and your car :thumbup1

Is it possible to start the car with the alternator belt removed?

I know you can with the PAS pump belt off.

If you can do those 2 you'll rule out the ancillaries.... Good luck!

Does your road trip start in the UK and you plan to leave the car there as a holiday motor, or similar? If so, don't leave her parked in the sun, as the lacquer will degrade far quicker that in the UK
I like Twin Cams.... and Single Cams...and now Turbos

Hey ! Sorry for the slow reply - so i removed the Aux belt, no luck - noise kept coming, then the PAS belt and again no luck the noise kept on.

Lifted the car up and spotted it was leaking coolant, that explains why the coolant tank was empty... only one culprit left, and yes it was the waterpump.

Steve, from Steve Lucas Recovery Kent, kindly looked after the car for me, and he was able to carry out:

Oil and filter change
Cambelt, Tensioner, Water pump, coolant / antifreeze
rear exhaust back box

Since then, I have also been a bit busy; having fitted
New Drivers Side Headlight Glass
New front windscreen
Two new front anti-roll bar drop links
New rear headrests (originals are missing)
Soldered the rear heated window cable after it split
Repaired the centre heater vent
Replaced the heater control dials so they all match
Washed, waxed and machine polished the exterior
Re-varnished the drivers side door wood and centre hockey stick wood
Fitted 4 SEI alloy wheels with good part worn tyres 5-6mm tread all round
Fitted Bosch wiper blades
Replaced the rear numberplate plastic surround

And it still failed its MOT - though only just a bit of welding is now needed...

Still to do:
Passenger front and rear wood needs re-varnishing as it is also splitting
Fit both new Pioneer front door speakers
Repair and re-fit door cars - secure with new brackets
Fit a new DAB & Bluetooth Head Unit
Replace the headlining
Wash and shampoo the seats and carpets,
detail the interior and boot and door shuts etc
Balance and align the wheels
Weld the passenger rear wheel arch
