216 coupe ride height

Post by 216secoupeessex »

Hi guys

Am trying to get some plans in place regarding my 216 coupe.
I think the ride height is a bit high but don't want to lower the car too much - something that will still look a bit factory but reduce the empty space between the top of the wheel and the wheel arch.
I have got some Rover 16" wheels to fit when my current tyres are worn down (currently 15" 5 spoke VVC wheels).

I was thinking :

i. Fit ZR\ZS springs - but I don't know how much this will lower the height and if its worth it. If its only a few mm I wont bother. I haven't got the money to spend £700 on a lowering kit and I don't want it too low anyway.
ii. Fit the 16" wheels and then upgrade the brakes to something sensible - probably zr160 discs and fit braided brake lines at the same time.

Can anyone tell\show me a coupe or cabriolet with a ZR\ZS spring combo?
Many thanks
Neil

This video might help you more as our good friend Matt did a review on some cheap coil overs for rovers (honda).

In the video you can see that the upper part of the shock absorber has only 2 fixing points. Our 216/416 have 3.

But on the site i have seen a coilovers with 3 studs, have you some information?

You would need adjustable top mounts anyway when dropping on coil overs.

I'd check that the 25mm front anti roll bar and 20/22mm rear was fitted before changing tyres or springs along with poly-bushing the drop links.
I would suggest wheel/tyre upgrade next to check clearance between wings and tyre tread.
If you use 16 inch wheels , test fit and measure the wheel arch to tyre before changing springs as the tyre profile will be critical, also you mention 280mm brakes. Dont forget that more powerful brakes will make your front inner wings closer to the tyres when you emergency brake so you will need decent tyre to wing clearance.
The reason I say this is because your tyre profile will to a large extent, dictate any possible lowering.
A 205/40/16 or 205/45/16 profile tyre will obvs allow more lowering than a 205/50/16 but the 50 profile tyre would make for a more comfortable ride with almost zero lowering possible on the spring side of things.
I've been through a similar process on my HHR400 and wish I had done it this way around.
Hope this helps.

You could look at this site

https://www.wheel-size.com/calc/

to get an indication of the result of any changes you might make.

I tired the ZR/ZS route before coilovers the difference it makes is not worth the time to swap the parts over. Ring Avo and get a set of lowering springs or coilovers
