Hello all,
My newly MoT 1994 214SEi has developed an odd fault with its steering.
It only occurs around initial start up. In order to exit my drive in the mornings, my wife has to give virtually full lock as she creeps off the drive. She complained that the steering was not smooth but instead was jerky but once out on the open road and on her journey, the steering was fine. I have tried it myself and found the steering does not move smoothly but does jerk a little as lock is applied.
As the car passed its MoT only days ago, I assume that joints would not be the issue especially as full lock manoeuvres a mile or so down the road did not replicate the jerkiness. The PAS reservoir has been topped up and there is a tiny leak from a union but nothing that has produced major fluid loss.
Is this the beginnings of PAS pump failure? Are there other symptoms to look for?
Thanks all. If anyone has any items to send me for the magazine, please let me know!!
Darrell

yep ps pump.

Check the aux belt tension. If loose it can slip (particularly when cold) giving the same symptoms.

Re: 214 SEi steering issue
If the system wheezes on full lock that is a symptom of air in the system. The usual method of bleeding air out is to rotate the steering from lock to lock. Needless to say that leaking union needs to be attended to asap. I wouldn't drive the vehicle too far before attending to it.
