Hi guys, I collected the 416 today that I saw for sale on the For Sale forum a couple of weeks ago.

The story is that the owner bought it new in 1990 as a 70 year old. He is now 96 and given up driving. The mileage when I picked it up was 26,900 bang on.

It doesn't have much service history (service book is missing), however I have had all the service history printed off by the garage it was serviced at since 1999. I have been advised if they find the book and any other docs (they think it's somewhere at home), they will post it onto me.

Anyway, the car is near mint. The are a couple of very minor scabs, and a bumper scrape, but on the whole I've got to say it's very good. It drives very tight too, and the automatic gearbox is smooth.

It has optional air conditioning too, which blows nice and cold. Manual windows in the back.

Plans for the car are to put some Rover alloys on it (not sure which ones yet) and replace the plugs and leads, and clean up the bumpers which are faded. I already started the bumper as you can see on the front offside.

I also noticed the engine was very hot and took a long time to cool down - it seemed much hotter than my 216 does after a long run. Not sure why this might be and if there's anything I need to look for. Temp gauge was fine on the 170 mile journey home, which was faultless.

The sunroof is standard, the a/c would have been an option.

I see it doesn't have the top spec radio cassette as fitted to the GTi and other top of the range models such as MG Montegos and Rover 800s.

I'll be at BL Day in it :cool

Any suggestions on the apparent "hot running"?
Temp gauge was OK but on lifting the bonnet, it seemed a lot lot hotter under there than it should have done. And also the fan was kicking in more quickly than it does on my 216.

Any suggestions? Radiator? Coolant flush?

Coolant flush and thermostat change. Have you dipped the oil?

Very nice acquisition I hope you're happy with her. I would change the ATF if it's not still a nice cherry red colour too. Oh and have the brake fluid flushed through with a pressure bleeding kit.

Hi Tim, will do that with the coolant and brakes and automatic transmission fluid :-)

Opening the bonnet yesterday was akin to opening an oven door!

Who was the supplying dealer? I believe it is a Cambridge reg but it doesn't look like a Marshall name on the number plate.

The car looks very good btw.

Tim - ATF is nice and pink!

Jeremy - the plates look original and it says "Ware Garages Ltd", along with the Rover logo.
