Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show 202421 Mar 2024
Don`t forget to come and see us on stand 5-818 in Hall 5 at the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show 2024 at the NEC in Birmingham.

Two of the three cars on display are project cars, both having been donated by their current owners. The first is a Celadon Green Rover 45 iXL 16v manual 5-door, first registered in August 2000, with only 38,000 miles on the clock. It has been garaged all its life, has been carefully looked after, and is in good condition. This car is on the road, having passed an MoT recently. The second car is a very rare one indeed – a Targa Red 1987 Rover 216 Vitesse EFi, a one owner car that has covered 88,000 miles. Currently, there are only three of these cars on-the-road in the UK, and hopefully this will be number four. Our third car is a lovely Rover 420 GSDi, which has been family owned since new by a club member. Having covered 180,000 miles and been off the road for the last eleven years, it is now in need of some TLC to return it to the road.

The two project cars will be sold either at the show or afterwards, with any profits made being shared between various charities.

The show is open to the public on Friday 22nd (10.00 - 17.30), Saturday 23rd (09.00 - 18.00) and Sunday 24th (09.00 - 17.00). We hope to see you there!

Rover Meteor Works Celebration event29 Feb 2024
There will be a special event to celebrate the Rover factories in Coventry on Saturday March 16th, from 9am until 3pm.

Rover occupied several sites in Coventry from the late 1800s to the 1940s. One of the last remaining original buildings on the second Meteor Works site is the former Rover Showroom, now known as the Litten Tree Building, on Warwick Row. It opened in 1910 and was used by Rover until 1932. It is due to be redeveloped this year.

With the help of the organisers of Coventry MotoFest, all Rover owners are invited to join the large collection of all later generations of Rover cars, based in Broadgate, in Coventry city centre. To attend this event in your Rover, pre-booking is necessary on the MotoFest website. There is a small £3 fee to help with MotoFest`s administration costs.

There will also be a collection of cars built at the second Meteor Works (pre-1930) in the Bull Yard, next to the original Rover showroom.

For further details please see the topic in the Events Forum.

Project Muriel handover at Pride of Longbridge16 Apr 2023
Project Muriel was handed over to her new owners, Adam (left) and Peter (centre) at PoL yesterday.

Muriel was donated to the club by the family of her first owner, and was subject of a recommissioning by the club before and during last month`s Restoration Show. During the show we received a generous offer for the car from the new owners, enabling us to make donations to the Red Cross Turkey/Syria Earthquake Appeal and Milton Keynes Museum.

At the handover there seemed to be a bit of discussion about whether to leave the paintwork as is, or to repaint!

We look forward to hearing how that works out and to hearing the feedback of their first drive of Muriel back to Lincolnshire.

Further photos from PoL can be found in the Past Events section of the website.

Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show with discovery+27 Mar 2023
We have just completed another successful weekend at the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show with discovery+, held at the NEC in Birmingham. Thanks to everybody who helped on the stand or popped by to say hello.

The main focus was 'Project Muriel', an early R8 5 door hatch recently donated to the club. The car had been sitting on a driveway in London for six years following the death of the original owner, Muriel. A lot of elbow grease was used to clean off moss and algae, a replacement leather interior fitted, and a full service carried out. 'Project Muriel' now has a new owner and the car will be handed over at Pride of Longbridge on 15th April.

The other car we worked on was a later R8 that is currently on loan through the Classic Car Loan Project. This car benefited from a new clutch as well as some routine servicing.

Finally, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Rover Streetwise, we had a modified 2004 3 door SE as our "show" car. This car has a 1.8 VVC engine taken from an MG ZR.

More photos from the show can be found on the Past Events page.

Classic Car Loan Project handover27 Nov 2022
Club committee member Paul Vincent handed over his Rover 214 SLi on loan through the Classic Car Loan Project today at the British Motor Museum at Gaydon.

The aim of the project is to encourage the next generation of classic car owners by giving younger drivers the use of a classic car for up to a year as an extended driving experience. Further details on the project can be found on its website: classiccarloanproject.co.uk.

If we are offered a stand at the Restoration Show at the NEC next March we intend to feature this car and cover the experience of both the owner and the recipient to provide more publicity for this worthwhile scheme.

Our photo shows the car at the handover along with (L to R) Bob Wilkinson (CCLP Co-ordinator), Ian Thorpe (loan car borrower), Paul and Teresa Vincent (owners) and Tom Caren (BMM Events Co-ordinator).

The Tomcat Affair @ 303 Apr 2022
The Rover 200 Coupe was launched in 1992, designed as a unique derivative of the highly successful Rover 200/400 Series range. To establish the cars credentials as a potent and reliable high-performance Coupe (codenamed Tomcat), a group of Rover employees working on the about-to-be-launched model established The Tomcat Affair team to break as many official UK Land Speed Records as possible. Their activities centred on the building of 2 special cars to run on the high-speed circuit at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, which resulted in 37 UK Land Speed Records being broken, 36 of which still stand today.

The Rover 200 & 400 Owners Club and the Rover Coupe Owners Club are joining forces and planning a unique celebration of the The Tomcat Affair on Sunday August 28th 2022, 30 years to the day after the first attempt. The clubs have teamed up with UTAC, the owners of the Millbrook Proving Ground, to recreate aspects of the event including an opportunity to drive on the same banked, high-speed circuit, but this time at closer to UK motorway speeds than the 156mph originally achieved!

Further details on this event can be found on our forum by clicking HERE. Owners of original or near-original road-going Rover 200 Coupes are invited to complete an application form for this exclusive event by clicking HERE.

Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show, with Discovery21 Mar 2022
It was great to see so many current members and meet many potential new members at the Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show with Discovery over the three days of the show.

Over the course of the weekend we managed to get quite a bit of work done on the main project car, the white 200 (R3) Vi - several bits of the aircon installation were fitted, and the thermostat was relocated from the awkward location behind the engine block to below the airbox using a Freelander PRT. Our restored car, the lovely red 216 (R8), looked fabulous, and the green 414 (HHR) now has two functioning mirrors and has had a good exterior clean and wax.

Many thanks to all that came to help for some, or all, of the show. It is greatly appreciated.

Roverfest - change of venue15 Mar 2022
The Roverfest Committee has been informed by Sywell that they are now unable to meet the previously agreed expectations and have cancelled the booking. The Roverfest Committee has been able to relocate the event and have been lucky in finding, at short notice, a suitable venue 15 miles from Sywell.

Roverfest 2022 will now take place in the village of Weston Underwood, Buckinghamshire (MK46 5JS) for the whole weekend of the 5th to 7th August 2022. Plans are in progress to provide onsite catering to satisfy existing rally bookings. The alternative venue is larger than that offered at Sywell and can accommodate limited camping and caravanning.

Rally attendees who are currently booked at the Aviator Hotel may receive a message cancelling their booking and incorrectly stating the event has been cancelled. Roverfest 2022 HAS NOT BEEN CANCELLED, just re-located.

Please visit the show`s website for further details.

Members had the opportunity of a guided tour of the museum before the AGM. The AGM itself was held on the top deck of one of the museum`s open top double decker buses. A ride on the museum`s other open top double decker followed the AGM for those members who chose to brace the falling temperature of what was a lovely sunny October day. As this is a busy area, not suitable for displaying our club cars, we are meeting at the nearby Wythall Transport Museum (B47 6JA) from 10.30am. There is the opportunity for a guided tour of the museum after the AGM has finished at a small additional cost - more details to follow.

We will be transported between the museum and Beckets Farm on one of their many buses!

Russ Swift back on two wheels in an R8 at the NEC14 Nov 2019
The Club reunited reknown stunt driver Russ Swift with a second generation Rover 200 (R8) at last weekend`s Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show With Discovery, held at the NEC in Birmingham. Russ rose to national (and international) acclaim in the late 1980s for his television adverts for Rover Group, starting with parking a Montego in a full office car park. Many cars, including the R8, have since been promoted by Russ` unique style of driving on two wheels. As the Club`s sectioned car was displayed with two wheels raised off the ground, we couldn`t resist getting Russ to pose for photos in it!

The display of the sectioned car was part of the Club`s celebration of the 30th anniversary of the launch of the second generation Rover 200, as well as the 35th anniversary of the launch of the original version (SD3). R8 Press Launch Re-Run15 Oct 2019
The club held a unique event last week to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the launch of the second generation Rover 200 (R8) by creating a re-run of the press launch at the original venue from 1989, Lucknam Park near Colerne in Wiltshire.

The day started with a display of the four launch models - 214 Si, 214 SLi, 214 GSi and 216 GSi - plus 12 other R8s in front of the country hotel that was hired by Rover for four weeks leading up to the public launch date of 11th October 1989. Members of the club were joined by several members of the press, some of whom had attended the original event 30 years ago.

There then followed a talk by club chairman John Batchelor, who worked on the R8 project; and Dennis Chick, who was Rover`s Group Product Communications Manager at the time of the launch. A buffet lunch was enjoyed by all before the cars set off to follow one of the original routes taken by the motoring press in 1989.
