I've been busier the last few weeks and have been enjoying driving Robin the Rover on some navigational rallies and on the track day! That being said I am still keen to try and finish off the work that it has needed. One thing that has been bugging me is the state of the front bumper.
Today i figured the weather was as good as it would ever get this time of year and decided to sort it out. Over the years Robin has taken a few knocks and scrapes and as a result the L/H indicator lens was cracked and delaminated. On the drivers' side the bumper has come off its rail and is sagging down, probably by the looks of it after taking another hit.

There's a great youtube video by "roverjoe" who posted how best to remove a front bumper, so i did my best and followed his instructions. By all accounts it was a relatively simple affair bar from a few screws that had rusted on.
Unfortunately under some time pressure I was unable to fully take off the bumper, so i instead tackled it by semi-removing the left side to re-attach onto the bracket, and removed the passenger indicator lens and replaced with one Chris sold me from 200&400 owner from the forum
It took all of 3 hours
I started by emptying wheel arch liners of mud. The drivers' side was absolutely caked in it. Slightly less on the passenger side. I am genuinely surprised there isnt more rust in the sills.

I did however notice a small rust bubble the size of a 5p coin on O/S front sill. I sanded this down with 120 and 180 grit sandpaper, applied some kurust and left 40 mins for it to cure. I then applied some filler primer. (next job is to paint and lacquer - more pics to follow )

I then worked to remove all of the retaining screws underneath the bumper that attach to the lining
I then removed the old O/S indicator lens - this was super simple and was held on by just one philips screw. The bracket it sits in was visibly bent so i straightened this out and re-fitted the new one for a snug fit

Then I took off the n/s front headlight. This was a bit of a chore, complicated by some rusty bolts and a difficult 10mm nut that is awkardly positioned underneath the lamp which makes removed a pig. Oddly upon removal i noticed that the glass separated from the case! I've not come across this before

Once off though i could get access to two 10mm bolts that hold the bumper on - once removed i was able to shimmy the bumper off and then re-align and re-fit back onto its hook!

Final result? I am pleased that its all back together again, with a good indicator lens and a tight fitting bumper. I do however wish i had a bit longer to treat some of the rust on the wing....

this does mean unfortunately that when it comes to treating the rust i may have to repeat the whole process and remove the front pumper again

But that's another job for another day and for now i am pleased its all back together again!
