Front Pipe & Clutch Bearings

Post by Paul_1978_yorks »

I have just bought another 214 SEi - I say another as I have one already, and have owned another in the past, so this will be my third. Not selling the silver one so I will have two on the go.

Anyway, it only has 34k on the clock but it needs an exhaust front pipe as it is cracked near the cat.

Also in first and second gear when changing gear, the clutch (I think) grumbles a bit. Not the gearbox I don't think as all gears engage OK and it pulls fine. I understand it may be the clutch bearings.
How much are new bearings, supplied and fitted?

Cheers

SEi gearbox woes

Post by Paul_1978_yorks »

OK......... replying to my own post!
It's not the clutch bearings. It's the first motion shaft bearing in the gearbox.
Which means the gearbox needs reconditioning.
From my research so far it's £350 upwards depending on where I go.
But it's worth doing - after all, the car only has 34k on the clock and is pretty much near mint.

You might be lucky and the problem only being confined to a worn input shaft bearing. My gearbox whines in neutral sometimes when I'm stationary, but it has always done that and the car has now covered 153K. Also a cheap fix might be to top the gear oil up and check the diff seals.

Not sure about the 1.4 boxes, but Dan replaced the bearings in my gearbox on the 220 for me and it wasn't has scary as it initially sounded. Was a fairly straightforward proceedure.

I know you're taking pot luck on the state of it, but I would have thought you'd get a gearbox from a breakers for a LOT less than £350. They're not that hard to change - a (long) morning's work...

Gearbox

Post by Paul_1978_yorks »

Hi all, just a quick update on the gearbox problem on my red SEi.

I got a reconditioned gearbox & new clutch for £300, supplied and fitted. Took it in this morning and picked it up late this afternoon.

Drives good as new and no grinding noises as previous!

Servicing it on Thursday and hopefully we'll have some nice weather at the back end of the week and I will wash/polish it, take pics and upload.

Cheers

Did you have a new clutch fitted as well, there is a guy on EBay selling three part unipart kits for £25. A bargain considering Rimmers want nearly £100 for the pressure plate.

Yes new clutch as well. I am not a confident mechanic and was reasonably happy to pay for a specialist to do the work.

Cheers!
