Failed MOT - have got a couple of questions

Post by jiminwatford »

Hi,
Took the 216 GTI for its MOT yesterday. Fairly successful, failing on three areas mainly.

CV boots Halfords asked me if the car had a Honda or a Rover gearbox. i said Honda seeing as it's a Honda engine, but wouldn't want to get the wrong part.

Anti rollbar rubber mounting brackets, both sides front and back. Looking at the back i'm not sure if it means the mounts at the end of the bar or the two part way in as there seems to be movement on both.

at the front i suspect it is the connecting links as these are what most stockists have listed. Would that be most likely?

OS handbrake insufficient force I think this may be a sticking caliper, if so how can these be freed. do i need to dismantle the caliper and clean it? or what exactly?

i'm sure this is all very simple but i don't want to spemd any money on the wrong part. so any help would be much appreciated.

thanks, James

As to your handbrake - it could be the calliper, but my instinct is to check the pads and the linkage first - either of these could be responcible and both are simpler to check and fix.

i suspect caliper as when i drove off after two weeks of it sitting there was a thump like noise from that side, like the brake just released itself

i'm not sure, but this is a GTI twin cam so that could be why.

Rear trailing arm mounting bushes

Post by miggy_dal »

I recently changed both o/s and n/s rear mounting bushes and i think these are what you need.

They look like half the length of a coke can but with a flat bar passing through the centre of the unit.

The MGRover EPC i have states they are £35 new.
But my motor factors (Culmac - Liverpool) have them on the shelf for £8 each.
I was told that they were £20 each a couple of years ago.

The front anti-roll bar drop links are also cheap at £5 each.
Again, mine where recently changed as there was plenty of play in them.

Hope this helps.

All the GTi models are equipped with rear discs.

The best thing you can do if you're not sure what to replace is to ask the MOT station, where you had the test done, to explain exactly what they meant.
I love my new coupe!!

Handbrake can also be affected by the disc thickness. I had calipers replaced on a GTi a few years back and within 12 months I had the same problem with the handbrake again. Changed the discs & cured the problem.
