If its a Honda engine it's probably the distributor on its way out, common fault I'm afraid, if you suddenly find your car refuses to start too you can put wages on it!

What engine is it?

If its the 218/418 derv then the wire has probably become disconnected form the alternator (or the alt is on its way out).

Afraid so, friends 416 and his 216 both went same way, refused to start but then would go if left a while. Be worth keeping an eye out for a replacement sooner rather than later, even if you just keep it in the boot until current one packs up completely!
