i have recently bought an M reg 420 Gsi and since getting it home the immobiliser has come on. the guy i got the car from has never had a fob for this car and according to the people at Mantels, this car does not show up on the Rover computers to having a Emergency Key Access Number, meaning at some point it had a key fob. Now, ive been told that buying a key fob and having it tuned to my car is the only way of getting around this problem, thus costing 100 pounds or more! which i obviously dont want to do after just spending out the money to buy the car in the first place! If anyone has any idea or knows if i can around this without geting it trailered to Mantels and costing me loads of money i would really appreciate it!
no theres a red 'Alarm' light on the dash thats constantly on. when i turn the key theres just nothing there. I know its the immobiliser cause the batterys almost new and all electrics work fine etc, just refuses to turn the engine over
Check the fuse for the alarm under the bonnet. If it is blown I think the immobiliser sulks and stops you from starting the car. I think the key should still disable the imobiliser when you use it in the door but I'm not totally sure on this.

only the fob can disarm the immob
Are you sure about that? As far as I am aware the alarm/immobiliser system is the same for all models with remote, infra-red alarm, and those without a remote.
I had a 214 with no fob (as standard), immobiliser/alarm was disabled on key.
