Changing to an early 'grille'

Post by 214cab »

Ray's topic reminded me how much I hate the chrome grille, I much prefer the early style.

What's the process to change? I have all the parts from my deceased cabriolet.

Easy hockey sticks and new grill

Unless you have a ph1 bonnet you will need to weld the holes and 're paint the bonnet

officially,

ph1 hockey sticks
ph1 bonnet
ph1 bonnet catch
ph1 grille
indicators (if not coupe)

Cabriolets and saloon/hatch/tourer did not have different bumpers. The hockey sticks come in two lengths - depending on the indicator. The only difference in the bonnet are the added holes - if you are not lucky enough to find one with badge and no grille in the correct colour, you simply should keep the bonnet.

Bonnet catch is important though, the lever for the one with chrome nose will be behind the bar and unreachable by hand.

For my Tourer I got all the bits in the correct colour and changing over was a thing of a few minutes with someone helping on the bonnet.

Alexander

On the 200 hatch, cabriolet and coupe there was a phase when the larger indicators were available without the chrome grille. That is all early Coupes and other 200s produced in the period when the 400 had gained the grille but the 200 was still waiting for it.

So you don't need to do the indicators/wings and I think that's quite a good look - early bonnet and the bigger indicators.

Well I've got the catch, the grill and if needed the hockey sticks from and early car.

Seems like a perfect little tinkering job for an evening. Can worry about badge and bonnet holes at a later date!

Had a little look this afternoon.

The changeover years that had the early grille but later indicators. Either had a unique grill (and used later hockey sticks) or had unique hockey sticks. Anyone on here got a car with that spec?

I have most of the relevant bits in the garage.

Will try to remember to have a look tomorrow evening and get some photos for you.

I think the missus 220 gti turbo is this spec. Has the bar grille and the later indicators.

The grille-bar is the same. The hockey sticks differ from cars with chrome nose to those without. You need to find the hockey sticks to match the indicators.
