218 vvc Cabby (pic heavy)

Post by RoverRevival »

Just for Greg and seeing as I haven't updated any of my threads recently, here's what's happening at the moment.

Started with a 216k cabrio with new mohair roof and steel wheels, few dings and scrapes but nothing major.

When I had it on the ramp it still had the original red paint underneath which has now been waxoiled as it will see a rainy day one day.
Nice low mileage example though.

The bumps

The repairs, all hammered and pressed out using paintless fix it tools but didn't look right so sanded and primer'ed again and painted.

Out in the sun waiting for its time on the ramp:

As the engine kept over heating we decided it was time to ditch it.

And now its on the ramp

Rebuilt vvc engine, loom and ecu from an mgf, but had to swap the gearbox for obvious reasons.

Just needs the mounts attaching and its time to fit.

So, the engine is now in and as always with modification there were little issues.

New Mainifold

Problem when swapping from a 216k to 218vvc is the exhaust doesn't match up. The vvc down pipe is longer but has a 3 point flange so will order one of those on Monday and see what my other exhausts can do.

and broke the stepper motor.

potential updates for next week:

drive shaft long
drive shaft short
radiator
and start to bolt the front suspension back together.

Not have it said I do things by half's, Santa's brought me some presents for the cabrio project.

New long and short drive shafts
Vvc down pipe
New radiator
Oil filter
And two sets of wheels nuts.

That's Sunday sorted then!

seeing as I had removed most of the front assembly to get at manifolds and drive shafts thought I might as well pull the bumper off so it can go get fixed.

definitely letting the rest of the car down

So decided to throw the day in and work on the cabby and got some serious progress done.

replaced
Image

All water pipes plumbed in
Image

New rad, fan and brackets fitted
Image

New drive shafts fitted and front suspension assembly rebuilt
Image
Image

vvc downpipe fitted but still need a cat and back box
Image

and back on the mot rims (wheels with good tyres to get through the mot "mot station thins I have 8 sets") while cosmos are being refurbed.

Tomorrow will be finishing off the wiring and plumbing in the power steering and working out how to fill the gearbox with oil and I see a test fire coming.

I'm following this with interest. Nice little project, Carl747 had a VVC cabby but iirc he had issues with driveshafts.
