When did the first R8s go on the road?

Post by Paul_1978_yorks »

Hi all, so when did the first R8s go on the road?

I know it was 1989, and I've seen a couple of G reg examples for sale recently, but they were registered in 1990.

The five door was launched on 11th October and available as 214Si, SLi, GSi and 216GSi. The existing SD3 continued alongside for a few months until the 400 was launched in April 1990. The 400 added the 416GTI to the line up as well as the lesser models.
I believe Duncan has the oldest known car (except for nr 1) and his was registered in the first week after launch .
214SLi H706JPJ (11 yrs of ownership)
214GSi G79XKV (R8 No.1) (10 yrs of ownership)
25GSi 2.0TD KX56KXM Owned from new.
75 2.5 Connoisseur SE Tourer (21 yrs of ownership)
Montego Countryman 2.0i (Back where I belong!)

Cheers mate. There is an early one on Preloved at the moment, registered 26th Jan 1990. Reg G860 OGT. (Posted to the For Sale section).

Be interesting to know if that is actually one of the very oldest on the road?

Even the AR Online Project Car (G776 RGC) wasn't registered til May 1990:

My current R8 came with some paperwork, and amongst it was an invoice saying that Rover 214 GSi registered G162 PMX had been part-ex'd for mine.

G162 PMX has long since been been scrapped, but DVLA shows it as being registered on 5th Jan 1990, so that was a very early one!

In relation to this, I had the interior fusebox cover out of mine today. There's a date matrix on the back where the mould tool is centre-popped every month. The earliest month marked is March 1989. "Just in time" yet to catch on at Rover, I guess! They obviously built a stockpile for the launch. I wonder where they hid them?

March would be when the production tooling was finished - ready to build the pre-series cars like our sectioned car.

Interior parts are left un-grained until all fit-and-finish issues are resolved, they are then taken out of the line and grained.
I like Twin Cams, Single Cams, Turbos and 5-cam VVCs :cool
