Why has your Tourer a old front and old rear back lights? It was your decission? Because the Tourer was not available without facelift in Germany.

Welcome to the club, from a fellow Tourer owner, although mine is a lowly 416....with the Honda DOHC D16A8 engine in it!!

Hi Rico,

for a start I never liked the body shape of the Tourer and really hate the later dash... So a good starting point to take this Tourer over from my brother when he emigrated. We had (and still have sat in the garden) an very early 216 GSi in dark red with all the options. To me a perfect car in every respect. Apart from the engine - we had one that used moderate amounts of oil (up 1l/500km) and when swapping this got one much worse. The 'new' engine used about 1l/100km initially. In the end that was the reason to get the Tourer, it's much higher mileage (currently on 230k kms), but the engine is very good. But the disappointment with the lack of quality on the interior trim was quite big. I also don't like this stick-on grille spoiling the clean lines of the design.

So I started to personalize the Tourer: The old interior was binned (apart from the dash), the carpet and full leather seats from the 1990 car fitted. Also the gearbox gaitor and knob was changed to the early one. The door trim centres still need to get in, but otherwise it's done and looks quite smart. Next was to bin the horrible fake wood around the heater controls and retrofit the old black one together with the older style handles. A leather bound steering wheel went in too.

Luckily I found a bonnet and all the trim parts from an older green cabby and swapped it for my 'grilled' bonnet. Despite being a different shade of BRG (HNA instead of HAM) it looks very smart - the different colour is not noticeable. When we got the Tourer, it had a set of 15" GSi wheels on it - again these had to go for my favourite R8 alloys. During winter it's sporting the hubcaps from the 216GSi instead of the original ones. Same with the rear lights - I prefer lights with a clear graphic showing the intended function.

Things to do: Fit door trim centres to match the seats and possibly rear electric windows. The casings will be retained to match the colour of the dashboard. The wooden trim will be changed to much nicer ones from the same car the seats stem from. Which leaves me with the question what I'll do with the remaining bit of fake wood on the dash - I want it gone, but don't yet know how. I'll probably cover it in cloth or vinyl matching the dash.

Things I'd like to do, but will most likely not do: Fit grey unpainted bumpers (there's scratches on the green ones far to often) and also paint the lower panels grey. I also think that the later front indicators are poorly shaped and would love to fit early wings. I've got a pair and in case I need to have any paintwork done on the car, I'll have these fitted. I'd also prefer the earlier bumper style, but it seems it was not made with a black top half....

My other half thinks I worry too much about a car that is just a tool to ferry us around, is parked outside all the time and gets washed about 2 or 3 times a year. I think she's got a point ;) And my hobby cars would surely love some more attention...
