From the Rover Manual the Vin letters roughly mean.

S - Geographic Area
A - Country
X - Manufacturer
XW - Marque/Model
Y - Class
W - Body
A - Engine
B - Transmission and Steering
A - Model Change
D - Assembly Plant

So anyone know what the different letters you can get for Y/W/A/B/A and what they mean to make up the vin code?

Right are you sitting comfortably? Theres a lot of information to list and it varies depending upon the age of your car as to how your translate it all!
Once you have your vin number compare its penultimate letter and all the subsequent numbers (e.g. SAXXWMBZEBD 001234) with the ranges shown below and then follow the corresponding post to decode it

1. VIN up to A798419

2. VIN A798420 to A871151 & B001001 onwards

3. 96 MY onwards (Coupe, Cabriolet & Tourer only)

Why does my 1995 214SI, have a lower number than my 1990 214 GSI?
The 1995 is 123***
The 1990 is 248***
