The 216 GSI had rear headrests, where as neither of my GTI's has, nor is the rear seat back fitted for them. It would appear that the 200 range had a straight horizontal seat back, whereas the 400 all had those small sculpted head rest's, as my M reg' 414Si has em' too!

Slight change of subject; but even back in the nineties there were a lot/some motoring journalist's prepared to give a biased review of what was [ and still is ] a very good car. Car magazines Jan' 1991 three way test of a 216GTi, Golf GTi and Renault 19TS in left hand drive, is a case in point. How many Renault 19's are still around today? :cursing

Think I've identified the radio in this car. There's one for sale on Ebay here:

Looks like it's an Austin Rover special - from the days of the Allegro, etc.

Quite what it's doing in a 416GTi I don't know.

Maybe it was fitted at the request of the purchaser? Or they didn't have their new range of radios sorted out when the R8 first came along?

The thing is - the plugs on the back don't look like the ISO/DIN standard ones. Wonder if the car's wiring loom has been converted?

Yes, that is the type of radio that was fitted into lower spec Metros, Maestros and Montegos during the mid 1980s. It should have the ISO block on the back, though.
Perhaps the original owner of the car didn't like the new-fangled digital head unit and preferred a two-knob set instead.

The missing bit would have been the tone control.

Yes it is an early low spec maestro head unit. It probably doesn't have ISO connectors on it though. They had DIN connectors early on so may have these. Not an issue to sort out though.
