K SERIES Refuses To Start

Post by Mr Teddy Bear »

As the title says that's what I did all this afternoon, while doing various jobs in the garage and garden. She has always been ubber reliable up until this evening, after cooking the ECU Case in the sun all afternoon she didn't want to start, wouldn't tick over and the battery charging light remained faintly on. I got her running and after a couple of minutes running everything was back to normal ish.

Has anybody else experienced these symptoms? Moral of the story [to date] is don't fry your semiconductors in the sun? :oops

Edit; this is the K Series that I'm talking about.

Today she won't fire up turns over, but not a sign of starting, help I'm now carless :scared

Today she aint starting at all, so I'm confused. I have removed both coolant temperature sensors and no difference. Took out a plug and that smells of petrol. Ran perfectly yesterday morning now dead.

Any idea's? What's the next thing to check? :headbanging

Never had anything quite like that, fortunately. You mentioned a smell of petrol. Presumably the plugs aren't soaked in petrol. Have you got a nice fat spark when turning the engine over? If you have, then maybe the timing's gone adrift if the ECU isn't reading the crankshaft position correctly. Might need to put it on a diagnostic machine. I did have a problem starting our 214 quite a few years ago. Took it to the local garage who put it on the diagnostic and concluded that the manifold pressure sensor within the ECU was faulty. Got an exchange unit and the starting has been very reliable since then.

Best of luck. It's harder to fix these things on the 200 series compared to old carburettor cars.

Heh! That's the main reason why I haven't killed my old 214S yet!
(But might do if a nice one comes out of the woodwork.)

Well, all the obvious checks have been done, removed the two coolant temp' sensors [ disconnected the battery, then removed the ECU plug and cleaned with WD40 and allowed to dry, removed all the relays and sprayed the pins etc ] So she is being recovered to a local ex Rover MG dealer tomorrow who possess workshop based TestBook diagnostic machine and have a decent reputation in the MG World. :clapping

Mine is a 1995 model year with a MEMS 1.9 ECU these have the old circular pre OBD11 Inteface Protocol diagnostic plug. So no DIY option there.

I will report back in due course, once my credit card stops screaming! :scared

Actually there is now. Some guy has been developing them and seems to be doing really well with them I can't remember the exact cost, but it is under a couple of hundred quid from memory. I'll need to dig out the details and post them up.

She has been low loaded off to Wilcox over the other side of Chipping Sodbury this morning………….being a dealer I don't think they would fit my parts/spares any way, so will have to wait and see what they say. :unsure
