Hi All
I recently purchased a 1994 216 Cab with a DOHC.
Never being a rover owner before, I'm concerned about the engine - I'll try to describe the best I can.
starts first time every time no problem
Pulling off, fine.
However, when in ears 4 and 5, and trying to give it a bit of gas, the car will say its at 3000 revs, and just sit there, the engine seems like its making a bit more noise but the rev counter and the speedo seem to stay the same.
In 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, I can hit 7K without a problem.
Not knowing a great deal about engines I'm kinda stumped - this is the first of many little niggles that I'm hoping arent going to cost me a lot of money.
Thanks in advance!
mike
216 D-series engine query
Having driven the car today to work and back I have decided that the clutch is on the way out!! Definitely not running as it should, sometimes the car will rev up and then the revs will just drop (and along with it, the speedo will then pick up). Kinda like driving an automatic!
So, are there any recommendations on the forum for 216 replacement parts?

E_T_V, its strange, sometimes the car wont go past 6K in higher gears but 1st + 2nd up to 7k easy.
So a bit of both really, sometime im hearing a lot of engine noise and not a lot of extra speed, but the revs go up, then suddenly drop, then the speed picks up. I'm going to take it out later (not my daily driver) and experiment.
Kelvyn, replacement parts, may as well go for something that will last, as I'm not that bothered about any extra performance.
Cheers for your help though

Any update on this?
Did you check spark plugs, ignition leads and distributor cap points and rotor arm? Also check airfilter isn't clogged. Is the earth wire from engine to slam panel in place?
To check ECU for fault codes, lift back the passenger footwell carpet. The ECU is there and there is a plastic circular window in it which flashes a red led in sequence to indicate a fault code. However, if it was flashing an error code, the "check engine" light would be illuminated.
For a list of the error codes, see here:

Thanks for those tips irishrover, certainly gives me something to look at next time i'm in the garage - the rover is now SORN until early next year.
A new clutch is a definite now - just gota find the time to do it! (and a big enough socket set)
thanks for your help guys. I'll check those fault codes and get back with some results
