414 radiator change

Post by androver »

I want to fit a new rad to my 1994 414 sli (no aircon).
1. The workshop manual says to raise the front of the car and remove the "underbelly" cover (panel), however, looking at the job on the car it would seem easier to leave the car on the deck and work from the top (providing hose clips can be undone from top). :?
2. Is there anything to watch out for - e.g. is the temperature transmitter normally reusable? The hoses are the originals from new but still seem supple and perfectly serviceable - should I change them anyway after 13 years and 99000 miles? :)
Can anyone advise please?

Its been a while since I did mine but as you have suggested I did mine from above. Access was a little tight but not too bad. If the hoses are in good nick then I'd be tempted to leave them as they are. A new set of jubilee clips might be needed though as they might prove difficult to remove after all those miles. I think mine were alright though.
You'll need a new seal for the temperature transmitter in the radiator but these usually come with the radiator anyway. I reused my old sensor without a problem.

Many thanks for the helpful reply.
The car passed the MOT today without any problems (having had a complete exhaust - except the cat - fitted last week).
I bought it 6 years ago with 12k miles on the clock - now on 99k. Has been an excellent car, still no sign of any rot underneath so it seems sensible to do what needs doing as and when and keep it, especially when you consider what it's worth as a part-ex! Replacing it I could end up with more trouble - better the devil you know, etc.

rad in 414

yeah you should be able to reuse all parts and the rad does come out the top but you may need to drop the exhaust manifold off as its very tight to get past.
