216 Cabriolet replacement hood
Hi.
Well, the CD has arrived and there is an amazing amount of detail in there - I think I could actually take the car apart and rebuild it if I wanted to. Roof is a tad more complicated than I thought, but still it should be do-able in about 8 hours I think... There's about 45 pages in total on the whole hood fitting, mechanism, fabrics and how it all goes together (and comes apart!!!). Well over 1,000 pages in total.
Alas, the new hood has not arrived yet, but I have e-mailed to find out where it is - I was expecting it a couple of days ago, but nothing yet.
Will keep you in the loop...
Regards
Tim Watts

Right then!
Battery is charged up!
I need to find a torx screwdriver big enough for the front seats, I'm guessing this should be a 35 or a 40 as my 30 is a bit too small.
Then its on to the roof! I've now got some new roof information thanks to Tim, so I can see about puting it all back together. I may take the whole thing off and start again, allowing me to bend the frame back into some kind of shape. Also I could do with weldong that arm onto the wheelarch.
So many jobs to do. I might start a blog covering the progress, at least that would be a reference to others suffering in the same way

hi Tim
I've had quite a succesful couple of days. A mate of mine came down to see us and we (well, he more than me to be fair) got the rest of the hood together and swapped the front seats over! It's looking really nice now.
Hopefully you can get your roof done soon. As for "christmas backlog".. hmm. next excuse will be easter backlog.
Anyways, a couple of pics!

Needs a good wash/wax now! Almost ready for the summer. Still going to be SORN for at least the next month or so.

Hi Mike.
Well, the hood finally arrived on Thursday, so I thought it was a good time to get it swapped this weekend.
Today's plan of attack, get the old stuff off. Doesn't look too glamorous at the moment, but at least I have a garage it can be in overnight (2nd picture).

Then tomorrow, to get the new hood on. Hopefully, having now worked out how it comes off (thanks to the CD) it should be Ok to put it all back. Should really replace the layer just under the hood as well as you can see from the images, but I don't have anything to replace it with, so it will just stay as-is, but hidden away.
Only problem is, as you may note from the pictures, the rear window is still in - the 5x Torque screws that hold its support in in the boot are a bit solid... Have WD40'd them for overnight and hopefully they will come off in the morning.
Wish me luck for tomorrow!!!

Hi Tim
Looking Good. I'm wondering whether to keep my old inner headlining, as it isnt in bad condition, in case you want to use it on yours.
Let me know how you get on!
I'm going to strip and rebuild the hood again at some point as it isnt quite perfect, although I hope just having the tonneau on will be enough for when i take it out. the inner lining sags in some places as I dont have a rivet gun!
Still, if you need any help let me know

Hmm - slow progress so far today.
Ah, but it all started when I came to take it out of the garage and it wouldn't start - flat battery. Looks like I left the boot open slightly overnight and the battery went dead where the car has not been used for a few months. So, off to Tesco to get some Jump Leads, and then got it going. Battery is now charging...
Then, had to go to Halfrauds to get an impact screwdriver to get the last 5 screws out of the rear-window section (where it meets the bodywork in the boot), and one of them is just mashed. Have a friend coming over with lots of tools in a while to shift it somehow for me.
So my plan of finishing by 3pm is not going well as I have not got anything of the new hood on yet - am about to put the window zip in place though and the hood onto the back frame so I will feel that I have achieved something.
Time is ticking...

Well, some progress. Fortunately, I have a security light next to where the car is, and also an inspection lamp. In the dark I made considerable achievement.
Back window is in, lower part of rear sides are attached and bolted back in.
Remaining is:-
Attach the headlining to the rods on the back shelf
Attach the seal to the D post and fit the hood parts there
Attach the hood to the front and refit the seal
Hopefully, just 2 hours tomorrow night when I get back from work and all will be done.
Has to be said, next time I won't be so stingey and will pay the extra £200, although if it wasn't for the f'in screw it would have all been done today. We live and learn...
