Post by mjl7972 »

Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I just got this
(Link below)

I am completley green on the K series but having owned about 10 800s Im ok with T series. Im sure I will need to ask a few questions but if I can provide any help I will certainly try my best.
Cheers
Mark

Welcome! I reckon you got a bargain with that! Honda lumps generally tend to go on and on, but they do have on achillies heel, and thats igniter units in the dizzy.

Well I got it home alright but there are a few issues with the car as expected. It has a service history to 2001 but I dont think the bonnet has been lifted since!!!
The air filter is definately the dirtiest I have ever seen by a long way.
The plugs all have a gap of about 4-5mm which Im sure cant be right they all need changing any way as the electrodes are worn away.(can anyone tell me the correct gap)
The oil is very thick and very black.
One of the spark plug holes has oil in it which I assume is a rocker gasket.
The passenger window is off its runner having taken the door card off one of the 'clamps' that hold the glass to the arm is broken. Can they be got separatley or do i need a whole mechanism?
The drivers door works with the key but not the remote (just makes a lot of noise).
The heater fan does not work on speed 1.
When I got home the expansion bottle was boiling over (very foamy) but the cap looked dodgy so I went to halfrauds and got a cap (marked up at "2.99 but went through the till at 73p!!) Someone has used a radweld type thing in it but i flushed all the foam out and bled the system and all seems well now.
Overall Im very pleased with the car and for £375 Im sure its a bargain.
:D

The D16 engine's spot on and my current 216 GSI is really quite nippy. Enjoy it, looks like a bit of a bargain with the current prices.

Dirty air filters cause havoc - She'll feel happier for some decent air n oil.
It would also suggest lots of town driving....or valves. What was the oil level like? She might well need a nice straight run to let her hair down - blow out some of that coke....once you've sussed the oil escape. These engines will tolerate poor maintenance more than most.
They don't like traffic and don't enjoy poodling about for too long. Never driven the four speed auto, though. Good for keeping the revs up I guess. They like that!
Plug gap = 1mm. Most plugs for the D16 off the shelf are already gapped correctly. Champion eons work well in these engines, I've found. NGKs don't seem to burn right.
Window bits are 2 a penny on ebay. You may need to get the mechanism, but hardly a deal breaker.
Remote locking could be the control unit, or sender. I think it's in the driver's door. Try a change of battery in the fob as well. The car seems to have been neglected.
The heater could be a number of things, but the resistor units fail sooner or later. Also on ebay for a few quid and worth changing anyway.
Hope this helps.
