Rover 416SLi Immobiliser issue

Hello everyone

I am new to Rover I recently bought a 416SLi automatic (N reg) and the immobiliser is a pain in the bum it keeps going off. The battery in the key fob needed replacing. When I put a new battery in it the fob refused to work and the immobiliser kept coming on.

is there a way of permanently disabling the immobiliser so the fob only opens and closes the door and the key starts the engine without the immobilising coming on?

There's a method that requires the driver to turn the key in the driver's lock back and forth to "spell out" the car's EKA (emergency key access code) - this will give you KEY ONLY access and the immobiliser (but not the alarm) will remain off until the remote key is used again.

If you're talking about the alarm going off by the way (horn sounding), then that's probably a faulty door switch - these are available new for about £20-£25 and can be replaced.

To resync a fob after a battery change, lock and unlock the drivers door with the key, then press the "lock" button on a known-to-be-working fob 4 times. The door should lock on the 4th (or maybe the 5th) press of fob's lock button, then the fob should be resynchronised with the car and should continue to work as normal.

If you need a replacement fob, you can buy them new for £30-£35 (they should be the Lucas "3TXA" type you buy) or less than that second hand (search "3TXA fob" on Ebay), and you can then buy a refurbish kit which includes a new case and new rubber buttons.

You can also buy refurbish kits that include new electronic click buttons and then a new timing crystal, but you need good micro-electronic level soldering skills and equipment to replace these yourself - the components and solder joints on the circuit board are tiny, and you'll probably fry the entire fob unless you're good at "quick and accurate " soldering and using either a 17 watt or 25 watt iron.

A new or refurbished fob will require the car to be reprogrammed - there's a unit under the dash that someone has to plug the right equipment into to put the car into "learning" mode and then fire each fob that you want to use with the car in turn. A UK product called "PScan" can be bought for about £150 that does this job, amongst many others...

Certain locksmiths offer a fob programming service - but they need your car to be with them, or you need to send them the immobiliser box from the car by post (your car then is undriveable until the unit is returned to you).

Another option is to find someone who makes an "immobiliser defeat" device. These are boxes that replicate the encrypted "I've been disarmed" message that the immobiliser box sends the ECU, so the car will start. If you fit one of these, the key fob will lock and unlock the doors, but the immobiliser won't need to disarm as the box of tricks is doing it for you, and the car will always start. Again, these companies need you to send them your immobiliser box from the car so they can "copy" the encrypted "disarm" message and have their add-on box do it instead.

Pscan is closer to £200 as you need an additional adapter as early cars don’t have odb.

Faulty door and boot switches can be cleaned and they are easy to take apart .
If you find that yours are beyond cleaning up I have good second hand ones ( cleaned ) at £5 for a door and £15 for the boot including postage in the uk .

Sorry for the late response, thanks for the help i was about to sort out by car, I managed to get my old key fob working again by dismantling it and cleaning the inside then once I put it back to together connecting it back to the car so now it works as good as new. Although I may get a 2nd fob just in case
