Further to previous, I've recently been getting 420 miles per tank (getting down to last 5 litres before filling up) which is strange because I'm not driving any differently.

I have a 1995 214 SLi 16v. 101k. I run from Plymouth to Portsmouth every week and average 430 miles to a tank, costing £51 to fill. Around town I get about 320 miles to the same fill. I think I use more coolant than fuel!

I get about 400 miles out of my SLD, and I drive it hard
, though I don't really go above 70 on the motorway though.

I've nevered check what I get per tank but my VVC Coupe does about 38/40 mpg and I rarely go over 100mph on the motorway

An obvious enharncement, but I've found I get around an extra 35-40 miles from a tank full of petrol if I give the tyres a few more psi, currently running my single point 214 on 32psi all round (opposed to 30psi in the handbook) and I can manage just over 400 miles on a good run from London to Lancashire, though that was untill my nerves held out so I guess fully brimmed to empty might see another 15 to 20 on top of that.
Weight is another big factor, with four passengers I'd be lucky to get 370 miles....

Agreed fully on weight, if you want better millage take everything you don't need out f the boot, and take off that roof rack (if you have one). Also, what do we need rear seats for anyway?
Oh and Red Icon, careful what you say on a public forum. KNowing what the police are like these days, if they read it you will be nicked

I've no idea - but if you gave us an MPG figure then we might have a clue.
Miles per £x is a useless measure because it depends upon the fuel costs. The figures I gave, for example, is for LPG purchased at 55p/litre. Converted to MPG that comes out at about 27 MPG and means something useful. However, cost wise, that's the equivalent of about 55 MPG because the fuel's so cheap.
Assuming a typical £1.14 per litre, you were getting about 44 MPG which sounds pretty good.
