T-series in the HHR 400

Post by Jewel 25 »

Morning all , I was just wondering what the potential issues are with the T-series engine fitted in the HHR. I recall oil leaks being common but not a critical failure and something you just live with.

I've had a 1.8 45 saloon for many years , I'd be interested to know how they differ in terms of performance , fuel efficiency and refinement. Is the 420 a more relaxed cruiser ?

The oil leak only happens because of lazy people not putting the £5 oil restrictor back in when rebuilding the engine and thinking the gasket can do all the work for them.

Compared to a k series there is an addition 50kg in weight to consider as well.

I’m nasp for the t-series is around 130-140bhp depending on ware. Remember the newest t-series is going to be 25yrs old. Power is matched to that of the 1.8k but with the benefits of the weight reduction.

T-series engine parts are getting really thin on the ground, it took me 6 weeks to find new piston rings.

I had a 820 with a T Series engine and found it to be a robust engine with loads of torque, economical and was well mated to the PG1 gearbox. I wouldn't worry about the oil leaks, they are only minor. It is certainly heavier than a K but then you would never buy an 800 for its handling! I've not had any experience of a T Series in a HHR but I guess it would make it more nose heavy but no more so than a diesel.
It is true that some items such as hoses and coolant pipes are getting hard to find.
