i had a simular problem, and it turned out to be the start of a head gasket failure.
whats your water levels like?
and have you got mayonaise in the filler cap?

fogot to add, when she is started, she runs fine. no lag. clean crisp acceleration. but when i stop the engine. it is still difficult to start.
