Rover 416 Tourer

Post by Tomkirk1993 »

Hi folks,

Recently treated myself to a Rover 416 Tourer to go alongside the 216 Vitesse. We've recently just had our first child and unfortunately the Vitesse doesn't have seat belts in the back to fit the car seat as it just missed the cut off date in 1986 (although could go in front as no airbags but prefer the back). I'm really happy with it and been using it pretty much as a daily driver recently. Lots of room and the boot space is really handy for all the baby stuff and also the family dogs.

Engine runs really nice and the previous owner said he'd replaced the original plastic throttle body with a better aluminium one off a different model. I think I've read something about this being a good mod to do but need to look into it a bit more. It does receive just over 50MPG on a run which is great and pulls nicely. The only real problem with the engine is that it seems loose a little coolant. The previous owner thought it was the heater matrix weeping although I'm fairly convinced now after using it for a few weeks that it may actually be the head gasket. I seem to get a little coolant on the lip of the block where the head doesn't cover on the timing belt side - if that makes sense? It certainly isn't mixing with the oil as it's still really clean and the exhaust runs clear so perhaps just leaking out rather than going into somewhere it shouldn't be..

Bodywork it acceptable all around except from the roof which has some bad lacquer peel. I've never seen car with it so bad. It's also purely on the roof and not the bonnet as well like you would expect so wondering if someone has maybe had a car cover on that has been damp and rubbing. If I'm passing a bodyshop at some point I might see about getting repaired.

The radio/cassette is a Rover R760 and unfortunately the previous owner was a little hopeless and hasn't sent me up the history for it which is annoying. Does anyone know if this radio has a keycode or not? I'll need to disconnect the battery at point and don't want to be left without it. Looking on ebay some seem to have codes and others not.

Hopefully I've attached some pictures for you...

Tom.

We can definitely help with the head gasket if you need us? Even with everything new (belts, water pump, thermostat ect.) you are around £400.

I've been watching your vids on YouTube and following you on social media - keep them coming!

I'll bear that in mind if things get busy and I run out of time although I quite often do everything myself and enjoy that aspect of car ownership.

The R760 came with a code, although it is possible to disable the code (if you have it!): hence the ones you see for sale with no code.

There are a few people around who can supply the code for yours: have a look on eBay (I think it has been discussed on this forum recently too, so you might be able to find some links). They will need the serial number off the side of the unit.

Thanks for that, I did see a somewhere online able to get a code from the serial number so I'll maybe pull it out a get a code sorted for it. If not I guess I could keep an eye for another radio with a code.
