Not a bad idea that weather permitting.... Just confirmed with bloke will pop to Kent on Tuesday daytime, so will be passing back down the A303 late afternoon. I'll toot around Wincanton and see if you can hear me enter Somerset with #2. Hope the old 216 SX doesn't get jealous whilst in hibernation.

I've not used it myself, but was looking at how best to restore the bumper tops / bump strips on my new cabby and this came highly recommended by mg-rover.org members.

i used meguires bumper and dash shine mine came up beautiful. waiting now for it to rain and see how long it lasts.

Hi,

I used Wurth Plastic Dye on mine - which is absolutely the bees-knees. I did the whole lot - bumpers first then the back board, then the side rubbing strips and finally the mud-flaps.

The dye goes on the bumpers really well - use plenty so you get a wet rub rather than a dry scratchy rub - and you'll only have to do 1 coat. Consistency is thicker than paint but runnier than toothpaste. They give you a little sponge to put it on with.

Oh.. and the car needs to be DRY and the weather needs to stay DRY for at least 1 hour - otherwise it runs and dries to looks horrible.

Did the back plate with a sponge too - plus a small toothbrush to get into the nooks and crannies. Same on the rubbing strips - used a toothbrush to get it into the rover emblems. The dye doesn't dry as well on the harder plastics - better to do 2 thin coats rather than just 1 on these.

You'll need to mask EVERYTHING off when you do it - as the dye stains paintwork and black plastic like the light trims, etc. Masking off the trim strips top and bottom was fun. For the plastic coloured stripe in the middle of these, I got the right width of masking tape and just rubbed it down along the full length and poked it in.

You can get the plastic dye in black and anthracite - the anthracite is the one to go for if you have grey bumpers. The colour difference is AMAZING. It does have a hint of blue in it - they look more shark grey than stone-grey - but I've done ALL of my car now and it does look the absolute dogs b******s. It's slightly darker grey than the tempest grey on the lower half of the car, but the effect is amazing - really.

Dye stays on - even in rain, muck, sunshine, etc.

Buy it over one of their trade counters for £25 a tube. I got mine from their main trade counter down in Kent and they DELIVERED 2 tubes for £53. You'll need 3 to do the whole car!!! If you order from the online sales telephone number they'll charge you a fortune - almost twice the price. Made this mistake on my 3rd tube.

Right - I'm going to have to clean her first - she needs it. Please be patient.

Just had the hatch and a replacement spoiler re-sprayed too - plus all new badges (managed to find a 216GSi one on Ebay and 16v one from Rimmers) and new ally plates, 'cause I fancied a change.

Roof still needs doing (lacquer off) and bonnet still needs a tidy up too...

So... I'll wait and see how the pics turn out - you might just get a good-looking rear one (of the car I mean).

I'm off from Wednesday - so I'll say Wednesday!

Right... bear in mind the car needs a clean - all the stripes and muck you see are just that - it's not the bumper stuff coming off, or dodgy paintwork - it's just 3 months worth of road dirt...

Comments please... What do you think? Personally, I think this Wurth stuff is the very best you can get. It's stayed on by the way - it was put on in July in warm sunshine and it's stayed on in the July and August heat and in the Winter rains - all the road muck you see just washes off and doesn't stain it or take it away.

The back is a re-spray by the way - the hatch and the spoiler. New 216 and 16v badges too... and ally plates.
